Elgin Fasteners Header Operator - 2nd Shift w/Sign On Bonus in Rockford, Illinois


Produces machined parts by operating a cold forming fastener heading machine for new, special, regular, or experimental jobs.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations

  • Set up and operate various machines

  • Maintains a clean machine and organized work area

  • Performs preventative maintenance including lubricating machines when needed

  • Makes minor repairs and notifies maintenance for other maintenance needs

  • Responsible for quality of parts

  • Performs variety of tasks such as counting, cleaning, returning gauges and fixtures, transferring of parts, assembling tooling for next job

  • Use measuring equipment to maintain close tolerances

  • Follows schedules and procedures

  • Adaptable to cell and team concepts as well as cross-training

  • Assists other forming operators if necessary

  • Completes First Piece Inspection and inspects work in progress using provided gauges necessary and outlined in Quality Standard Operating Procedures and/or work instructions

  • Check blanks for mixed stock and for foreign products

  • Responsible for quality of own work

  • Forklift (i.e. powered industrial truck) operation

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment. Work involves frequent lifting of materials and product up to 30 pounds and seldom lifting to 50lbs. Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle and/or adjust equipment. Moderate reaching, pushing, pulling, gripping and grasping. Machinery operation requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel toed work boots or shoes.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time Second Shift (2pm-10pm) position at 40+ hours per week. Occasional overtime, evening and weekend work may be required to meet business demands.


Based on experience. Second shift premium is $1.00.

Required Education and Experience

  • Must be 18 years or older

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent

  • 3-5 years? experience in cold heading

  • Some computer literacy required

  • Capable of using measuring instruments, i.e. micrometer, calipers, height gauge, etc

  • Capable of using hand tools (i.e. screwdriver, wrenches etc.)

  • Ability to read and write, perform basic arithmetic and follow verbal and written instructions.

  • Ability to withstand stress that may accompany deadlines, or work on complicated problems for extended periods of time.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • 5-7 years? experience in cold heading
