Summary

About the Position: This position will be filled on a temporary basis, not to exceed one year, with provisions to extend up to five years, and provisions to be made permanent. This position will be filled at the GS-09; GS-10; GS-11; or GS-12 level. If selected at the GS-09, GS-10, or GS-11 level, non-competitive promotion to full performance GS-12 is authorized.

Responsibilities

Works in the Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence

Performs various technical engineering, scanning, modeling, and analyzing tasks in support of Additive Manufacturing design, development, and production of 3D printed components and other items.

Serves as the item manufacturing technical expert and advisor for the development of 3D printing of new items or modifications to components.

Selects method and makes necessary assumptions to determine proper model orientation and support structure required to achieve technical characteristics and successfully print a 3D component on a variety of machines and materials.

Provides design coordination for engineers and technical staff through the use of Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CAD) models.

Establishes production plans, in-process quality control and cost estimates in support of the 3D print.

Create and modify bill of materials and process plans in Logistics Modernization Program (LMP) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) as needed.

Provides recommendations for acceptance or rejection of 3D printed item on a case by case basis within the individual program intent and customer needs.

Designs shape, size structures and mechanical aspects of assigned items and identifies support structure options in terms of feasibility for 3D printing.

Identifies printing materials and machine parameters to be used, as well as cost, and post-processing of 3D printed item

Prepares and releases Computer Aided Design (CAD) master models and associated check prints in accordance with customer technical data.

Prepares detailed engineering layouts and drawings in support of prototype manufacture and/or proposed revision to existing technical data.

Develops, compiles and prepares project reports regarding the background, current and future work involved in the production engineering of assigned items and prototyping activities.

Prepares technical reports that document and explain sometimes complex, technical issues for an audience with widely ranging technical backgrounds.

Responsible for establishing and implementing new and revised production plans and procedures to the production area.

These duties are at the full performance level. Duties at the GS-09; GS-10; and GS-11 level are developmental leading up to full performance level.

OR Education Substitution: Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in an appropriate field of engineering, or mechanical engineering technology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent. Mechanical EngineeringOral CommunicationTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09/10/11). PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Desk work and frequent walking/standing are required to trouble shoot problems in the manufacturing areas or test range. Makes frequent trips to the manufacturing shops and test range to obtain and verify information. While on these trips may be required to lift equipment that weighs up to 50 pounds and work long periods standing and walking, occasionally stooping, bending, kneeling and working in tiring uncomfortable positions. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is regularly performed in offices, shop and test range. The manufacturing areas and test ranges require the use of appropriate protective and safety gear (ear plugs, safety glasses, safety shoes, etc.) and applicable safety precautions.
