Summary

The position is located in the Facility Management Department (FMD) of the Facility Support Directorate located in the Captain James A. Lovell (FHCC) in North Chicago, Illinois. The James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center is larger than just a single facility, but rather a system of facilities throughout Northeastern Illinois which provide medical case and dental services to U.S. Military Veterans, Recruits, Active Duty and eligible beneficiaries.

Responsibilities

Primary duties include but are no limited to the following: Installs, repairs, modifies, and calibrates all aspects of HVAC and refrigeration equipment related to electronics/electrical systems. Performs preventive maintenance on various equipment related to HVAC and refrigeration related to the electronic/electrical systems. Lays out and installs various types of electronic devices throughout the various mechanical systems. Troubleshoots, calibrates and analyzes defects or malfunctions of HVAC and refrigeration equipment related to electronic controls. Interprets blueprints and sketches and transfers their content into operation. Manages alarms and set points for all HVAC and refrigeration equipment. Creates/modifies programming sequences. Performs various tasks utilizing specialized tools such as analyzers, multimeters, test kits, etc. Utilizes the Building Automation system to troubleshoot HVAC and refrigeration systems. Trains and mentors lower grade shop members such as Utility System Repairman, Utility Operators and Air Conditioning Mechanics on all aspects of the Automation System. Plans work around the needs of the VA hospital to limit service disruptions and inconveniences. Tests various devices throughout the building automation system once replacement or repairs have been made Work Schedule: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

Must be capable of lifting, carrying, and moving items weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted and heaver loads with assistance. Will be required to work from ladders, scaffolding and/or platforms to accomplish assignments when systems are located in hard to reach places. May be required to work in close quarters or in cramped positions. Work hand /eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate tools when assembling units and replacing defective components, coordination for reading and setting gauges, adjusting controls, etc., and color discrimination to recognize color codes. Work frequently requires stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling for long period of time. Works indoors and outdoors, on elevated structures, and in cramped areas. Subject to discomfort from face masks and/or other protective devices when there is a possibility of exposure to infectious disease is possible. Other hazards include the possibility of electrical shock/burn; injuries to skin, eyes and lungs from refrigerants, gases, chemicals and solvents; and danger of cuts, scratches, and bruises. Exposure to dust, foul ordos, dampness, and the hazards of power machinery are common during performance of daily assignments.
