General Information & Responsibilities
REPORTS TO: Dean of Liberal Arts & Sciences
TYPE OF SUPERVISION GIVEN TO OTHERS: Indirect supervision given to student workers/work study students in Natural Science and Engineering departmental labs and other departmental labs as needed.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Lab Tech is responsible for coordination of East Campus Natural Science and Engineering departmental laboratory and other departmental laboratory preparation, laboratory/equipment maintenance, indirect supervision of student workers and work study students, and chemical/hazardous waste management.
Description of All Duties
DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Accurately prepares and removes departmental lab setups based on instructional needs.
Cleans and maintains departmental laboratories, stock rooms, chemical storeroom, prep rooms, and classrooms.
Order supplies. Works with vendors to ensure that living specimens arrive at times appropriate for their classroom use.
Maintains departmental media, equipment, materials and supplies (such as chemicals, microbiological agents, glassware, etc.). Removes and disposes outdated or unused media, equipment, materials, and supplies. Maintains a current inventory.
Maintains and updates Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS’s) and accurately labels all chemicals, materials, and supplies according to OSHA regulations.
Creates and updates the Standard Operating Procedures for departmental safety.
Coordinates hazardous waste handling, disposal and recordkeeping for all East Campus locations.
Provides general laboratory assistance to departmental faculty and students.
Coordinates and works cooperatively with the Quad Cities lab tech.
Maintains satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.

Directs and coordinates student workers/work study students for Natural Science and Engineering departmental labs and other departmental labs as needed.
Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Works directly for and cooperatively with the Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Works directly and cooperatively with faculty associated with the labs and all other East Campus faculty.
Works directly and cooperatively with department chairs, and the Executive Dean for East Campus.
Works directly and cooperatively with the Quad Cities lab tech.
Works directly and cooperatively with students, staff, vendors, and the general public.
Works directly and cooperatively with agencies related to the duties of the position.
Education & Experience
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.)
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a science related field required.
Basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office applications required.
Good written and oral communication skills required.
Good organizational skills required.
Ability to maintain confidential information and records required.
Ability to work with diverse populations required.
Basic knowledge of laboratory operations, procedures, and safety preferred.
Prior experience in laboratory coordination and management preferred.
OSHA 30-hour general industry training certification preferred.
Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel and work from all College locations required.

Salary range is $12.26 - $35.36 per hour.
