Prairie State Generating Co., LLC Safety Manager - Mine in Mine, Illinois

Reporting to the VP, Mining, promote a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, subcontractors, and vendors by evaluating safety performance and procedures, investigate and report all significant safety incidences (accidents, injuries, deviations from safety procedures and significant near misses) and develop/implement safety and health programs. Ensure compliance with applicable state and federal laws, and company policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, any one of the following assigned areas:

  • Contributes to the health and safety of the PSGC employees through the development and implementation of effective health and safety programs, policies and procedures.

  • Contributes to a reduction in operating costs by providing health and safety programs which reduce property damage claims, citations, worker’s compensation claims, and downtime due to lost-time injuries.

  • Prevents initial personal injury and accidents by coordinating and assisting in thorough accident investigations and provides management with specific recommendations to prevent recurrence.

  • Focuses and conducts training on programs and systems aimed at reducing workplace accidents and incidents. Programs include but are not limited to Root Cause Analyses, Human Performance Training, Core Safety, Stretch and Flex programs, and job preview training.

  • Develop emergency preparedness plans and provide specific guidance in implementation of the plan. Conduct training programs for all employees regarding the emergency preparedness and emergency response plans.

  • Act as a critical resource to the Core Safety and ESHAG teams.

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business or Occupational Safety and 15 years of experience working in an underground mining environment preferred, OR

  • Minimum 15 years safety or leadership experience in an underground mining environment is required


  • Face Papers (Required)

  • State of Illinois Mine Manager Certification (Required)

  • State of Illinois General Surface Supervisor (Required)

  • MSHA Surface and Underground Instructor (Required)

  • Mine Rescue Trainer (Preferred)

  • EMT (Preferred)

Knowledge of

  • Knowledge of safety and health procedures, first aid methods, mine rescue and firefighting techniques.

  • Knowledge of state and federal health and safety laws required.

  • Microsoft Office Suite, for preparation of presentations and reports.

  • Basic case management
