Description

Clearwave Communications, a Cable One brand, is hiring a Fiber Splicer to join their Mascoutah, IL team. The Fiber Splicer I is responsible for the installation, prepping, splicing, testing and troubleshooting of fiber optic cabling in both inside plant and outside plant environments. The position requires a good working knowledge of fiber optic networks and their related equipment to provide maximum operating efficiency.

How you will contribute to the Company’s success:

  • Performs splicing of fiber optic cables, both fusion and mechanical, to include terminating various types of connectors.

  • Performs testing utilizing OTDR’s, Power Meter/Light Sources, OLTS and VFLs; interprets and analyzes data; identifies and troubleshoots problems.

  • Reads, creates and maintains accurate splicing schematics, records and diagrams.

  • Performs aerial construction activities, including but not limited to, installing aerial fiber, installing fiber storage (snow shoes), completing pole transfers and performing necessary clean-up work.

  • Performs underground construction activities, including but not limited to, pulling cable/fiber through conduits, digging up and repairing damaged conduit and underground vaults or pedestals.

  • Pulls various type of cables, including, but not limited to fiber, coax and copper in conduit.

  • Performs traffic control flagging duties for roads and highways as needed.

  • Ensures company assets are properly and continuously maintained in excellent operating condition while secured in a safe manner.

  • Accurately completes progress forms, project activity reports and all other documentation pertaining to work assignments.

  • Surveys jobs sites while considering all safety measures to ensure a safe working environment for associates, general public and property.

  • Stays familiar with proper safety equipment and the proper use of the equipment and installation.

    What you’ll need to succeed in this role:

  • Prior training and experience of at least one year in the telecommunications industry with fiber optic cabling and splicing is desired.

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and a good driving record. If no CDL, must be able to obtain one within 30 days and a CLASS A within 6 months of employment.

  • Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) certification or Advanced OSP Technician training within the first year of employment

  • Must have good attention to detail regarding setting up splice locations, termination points and general fiber construction.

  • Knowledge of splicing loose tube fiber cables of all count sizes.

  • Must be comfortable entering and maintaining existing splice enclosures.

  • Knowledge of BICSI, EIA, TIA standards.

  • Ability to follow directions.

  • Ability to operate hand, power and specialty tools.

  • Positive attitude.

  • Must display strong work ethic and dependability.

  • Ability to recognize priority issues and escalate accordingly.
