General Dynamics Ordnance & Tactical Systems Senior Manager- Continuous Improvement in Marion, Illinois

The position will serve as the Continuous Improvement (CI) Leader for the site. This role uses lean and six sigma knowledge of CI tools along with strong leadership competencies to recognize and drive opportunities for improvement across all aspects of the business. The Continuous Improvement Leader will train and mentor all functional process owners in the concepts of CI and various tools used and work with Staff to develop an overall CI strategy that best meets the needs of the organization. This position will develop and foster a culture of CI by leading improvement activities involving employees from all levels of the organization and is to drive the formation and coordination of the business improvement portfolio of strategies. This will include developing the inputs from operational metrics, internal and external customer feedback, employee feedback and executive direction to identify challenges; taking these inputs to help prioritize and align the company’s improvement projects/events and process accountability. Coordinating with leadership the portfolio to deliver the necessary outputs that will drive the business outcomes and hence transformation to a business excellence environment. Support of root cause analysis and corrective action teams will also be a critical part of the position along with actively participating in industry associations for benchmarking and implementation of best practices. This critical role will be part of the leadership team reporting directly to the GM.

  • Acts as an unwavering advocate of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodology; partner to the GM in leading the organization, through cultural change, to embrace an environment of continuous improvement and employee engagement.

  • Spearhead the annual development of company Strategic Imperatives and execution throughout the year.

  • Provide mentoring and leadership to all functional leaders to drive strategic goals and objectives down into the organization (alignment across departments is critical).

  • Coaches, mentors and provides general support/leadership to the organization on the use of Lean and Six Sigma continuous improvement tools.

  • Develop and implement an operations/business continuous improvement roadmap that includes a project selection methodology/list and, work with the management team to deploy the plan.

  • Maintain and drive that project selection process for the business in and prioritize to gain maximum benefit.

  • Preparing needs analyses of identified processes from the project selection list to achieve and exceed key metrics.

  • Perform capacity planning, as needed. Understand MRP and related business systems concepts and be able to pull relevant reports.

  • Spearhead operational excellence benchmark opportunities, in and outside of GD-OTS.

  • Identifies opportunities for improvement, develops a project plan for implementing improvements, and monitors the new process to ensure it works as intended.

  • Develop and facilitate team charters to meet objectives of each opportunity identified.

  • Train, educate and mentor those assigned to each chartered activity.

  • Conduct project review meetings (build the cadence – daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc).

  • Create communication mechanisms for managing and tracking progress against targets (metric/goals).

  • Identify and facilitate process improvement projects/events to drive overall strategic and daily management objectives.

  • Develop and improve manufacturing and administrative processes through the use of lean tools.

  • Lead 5S deployment throughout the site in both manufacturing and administrative areas.

  • Carry out advanced data collection and analysis for process mapping, budget development and cost analysis to determine project feasibility.

  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously and set priorities to meet deadlines on schedule and within forecasted budget.

  • Drive value stream mapping to define current and the transition to future state.

  • Drive cost savings efforts through cycle time decreases, transactional opportunities, setup reduction, etc.

  • Advises managers and executives on gaps and opportunities for integration of the business system and process improvements, within and between work groups.

  • Perform capital equipment justification and process capital appropriation requests (CAR). Perform make-buy analysis and present to management.

  • Recommends training programs and interacts with outside and internal trainers.

  • Ensures integration of safety and quality into every facet of all activities.

  • Performs other duties, as required.

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (industrial or manufacturing engineering preferred), similar technical degree and or Business degree with technical background via experience.

  • Hold recognized LSS Black Belt certification (preferred).

  • Preferred: Certified Kaizen Leader (or equivalent experience) in 3 or more of the following lean tools (Standard Work, Lean Conversion, Transactional Process Improvement, 5S, Value Stream Mapping and Total Productive Maintenance). If not certified, ability to become so and facilitate and or lead these events as required.

Experience Required:

  • 10-12 years of operations/manufacturing related work experience, preferably in both high and low volume mix model production.

  • Strong math, analytical, problem solving and project management skills.

  • Supervisory experience required with manufacturing engineering/management experience preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal skills, good interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, negotiation and time management skills.

  • Experience developing processes, writing procedures and training hourly and exempt associates.
