Basic Purpose

The Research with Ion Beams and Isotopes Group in the Physics Division is supporting Argonne’s Radioisotope Research and Production Program (R2P2) in conducting R&D and production demonstration experiments for radioisotopes with applications in nuclear medicine. We are also doing research with ion beams, related to ion beam therapy. We are seeking outstanding candidates for postdoctoral positions to perform laboratory research involving the production and purification of accelerator-produced radionuclides, as well as, research with ion beams related to cellular radiobiology. A significant aspect of this work includes chemical process and equipment engineering as well as target design for the production, separation, purification, and analysis of radionuclides. The successful candidate will be joining a team of chemists, physicists, and engineers conducting research and development related to medical isotopes and ion beam therapy. Candidates with experience in radiochemistry and/or ion beam physics are invited to apply. We are posting 2 positions for post-doctoral appointments in our group. This one is oriented towards nuclear physics and ion beam physics expertise and a companion posting will be oriented towards radiochemistry expertise.

Job Description:

  • Conduct research aligned with Argonne’s strategic missions, specifically to work within the R2P2, which is supported by the DOE Isotope Program.
  • With mentoring, the post-doc will conceive and conduct research dominantly using electron or ion beams from accelerators applied to radioisotope production or cellular radiobiology.
  • The duties also involve preparation of safety documentation and procedures, and the promotion of research results through journal publications, conference presentations, and technical reports.
  • The successful candidate will contribute to discovery and technological advances in applications related to production of medical radioisotopes and ion beam therapy.
  • These activities will strengthen the post-doc’s career path opportunities by expanding technological skills, developing independent research capabilities, and building other professional skills such as communication, networking and leadership.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Successful candidates will have education and experience in some of the following:
  • Knowledge of and experience in the fields of nuclear physics and accelerator physics for a variety of applications.
  • Experience in target design and irradiation with electron or ion beams from accelerators to produce radioactive isotopes and/or irradiation of materials or biological samples.
  • Experience with computer simulations of nuclear reactions and shielding requirements for production of radioactive isotopes. Specifically, experience with large-scale Monte Carlo simulations with codes such as MCNP, PHITS, GEANT4 is desired. Experience with CAD software and thermal finite element analysis is, also, a plus.
  • Experience in safe handling of radioactive materials and knowledge of radiation safety issues related to working at accelerators.
  • Experience in the use of detectors such as ion chambers, proportional counters, gamma detectors, and other radiation or ion beam monitors.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent and collaborative research in a multidisciplinary team with the ability to meet deliverables and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated creative and proactive approach towards scientific problem solving.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Education Level:

This level of knowledge and skill is typically achieved through research in nuclear or ion beam physics at the Ph.D. degree level and 0-1 year of experience in separation science and radiochemistry.
