The X-ray Science Division (XSD) of Argonne National Laboratory enables world-class research using x-rays by developing cutting edge X-ray instrumentation and techniques, and pursuing research in the physical, chemical, environmental, and materials sciences. To accomplish this mission, XSD fully operates 43 beamlines and is a partner in the operation of three more beamlines at the Advanced Photon Source (APS).
We are currently seeking to fill a Beamline Scientist position at the 6-ID-D high-energy scattering beamline. This beamline operates in the 50-130 keV range using a superconducting undulator as its primary x-ray source and a Si(311) / Si(331) bent Laue monochromator. The experimental station includes a Huber psi diffractometer for single crystal diffraction as well as instrumentation for powder diffraction and PDF measurements in a variety of sample environments.
The successful candidate will develop and support the high-energy single-crystal diffraction user and research programs. A main thrust of this program is to develop x-ray scattering techniques to probe long- and short-ranged atomic and electronic correlations in single crystalline samples using high energy x-rays. This involves implementing hardware for high-throughput data collection, and software for data processing and analysis leveraging high-performance computing capabilities at Argonne. Additional activities include development of sample environments for single crystal diffraction under external stimuli such as uniaxial strain, hydrostatic pressure, low- and high-temperatures, electric and magnetic fields. This position involves individual and/or collaborative research aimed at pushing the envelope in the application of high-energy single crystal diffraction to address frontier problems in condensed matter physics and materials science. The candidate is also expected to leverage the high brilliance and/or coherence of the upgraded APS-U x-ray source to advance high-energy scattering techniques.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Significant knowledge of fundamentals of single crystal diffraction as a probe of long- and short-ranged atomic and electronic correlations.
- Experience and skill in implementation aspects of single crystal diffraction experiments.
- Significant knowledge of condensed matter physics.
- Significant experience and skill in advanced data analysis.
- Good knowledge of x-ray optics, x-ray detectors, and precision instrumentation.
- Good knowledge of fundamentals of synchrotron radiation.
- Interest in developing and maintaining instrumentation for high-energy x-ray scattering experiments.
- Strong problem-solving skills and communication skills, both oral and written.
- Personal attributes should include critical thinking, good judgment, clear sense of purpose, attention to details, ability to work effectively in a team, and accountability.
RD2 Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of experience; Master’s and 3+ years; Doctorate and 0 years, or equivalent.
