Topco Associates Associate Quality Assurance Manager in Elk Grove Village, Illinois

Topco Associates is currently seeking an Associate Quality Assurance Manager for non-food items in Elk Grove Village, IL.

The Associate QA Manager promotes the delivery of optimal Quality Assurance services to member companies (regional grocery retailers and wholesalers) by managing and directing Quality Assurance activities within grocery non-foods categories to perform product and supplier facilities approvals, perform and maintain product monitoring reviews, develop and maintain finished product specifications; maintain approved supplier facilities certification/audit information; ensure product and supplier compliance with specifications and regulations at all points through the distribution channels, provide and maintain product technical information; investigate and resolve product quality issues.

  • Actively develops plans and implements procedures and methods to define and maintain the quality of Topco private label products in accordance with established policy, including brand standard equivalence, finished product specifications, supplier facilities and product approval

  • Maintains a high level of efficiency and productivity in QA operations within assigned area of responsibility

  • Establishes/reviews protocols for effective management of product quality within assigned area of responsibility

  • Oversees product monitoring programs managed by the QA Specialists and ensures that vendors with recurring inconsistent performance are adequately monitored, and actions taken to improve their overall performance or remove those vendors from active status as a Topco supplier

  • Owns assigned product categories and manages for all aspects of vendor and product quality & safety compliance. Product categories can include both foods and non-foods

  • Works cooperatively with other facets within Topco QA (Sensory, Regulatory/Nutrition) to ensure all aspects of QA are in concert with each other

  • Works in concert with other departments within Topco in support of corporate goals

  • Supervises, counsels, and directs the activities of QA Specialists in product testing, product specification development, supplier evaluation and communication, member requests and complaints, product quality issues, product withdrawals/recalls and other related activities.

  • Promotes maximum efficiency of reporting staff by recommending training and conducting performance appraisals on a scheduled basis

  • As required, administers competitive product evaluation programs and product/supplier development activities

  • Organizes and conducts competitive cuttings and demonstrations for existing, new, and potential members

  • Keeps current with all laws and regulations affecting Topco products and ensures that products are in compliance

  • Enhances the effectiveness of the department by developing and maintaining automation, procedures, systems and reporting methodologies

  • Represents Topco as needed within industry organizations

  • Performs other related duties as assigned


  • Minimum four-year college degree in Engineering, Chemistry or related field preferred.

Previous Experience:

  • At least five years in related positions with comparable Quality Assurance experience in the grocery retail or product manufacturing (CPG) fields

  • Supervisory and/or management experience

  • Experience with testing products and documenting results of non-foods items

Technical Skills:

  • Knowledge of systems and procedures for lab operations

  • Broad based knowledge of non-foods product technologies and regulations

  • Knowledge of production methods and quality control systems and procedures

  • Knowledge of food/product safety principles and global standards

  • In-depth technical product knowledge in one or more of assigned areas of responsibility

  • Knowledge of labeling regulations as well as federal, state and local government regulations

  • Non-Foods products: Knowledge of CPSC, FTC, FDA, EPA and other industry-specific regulations

  • Superior ability to communicate effectively with others at all levels verbally and in writing

  • Willingness and ability to give oral presentations and conduct cuttings and demonstrations before small and large audiences

  • Ability to work smoothly and effectively with people at all levels both at Topco and at external locations

  • Ability to display a high degree of professionalism and personal integrity at all times

  • Ability to effectively evaluate, and critique non-foods products and/or foods products

  • Ability to assess product safety and quality programs and practices
