We have an opening for a Scientist, Fermentation at our Corporate Research Center located in Decatur, IL!

Position Summary

We are looking for a scientist to carry out fermentations at 7.5L scale for a range of processes aimed at producing amino acids, organic acids, hydrocolloids, and enzymes. This scientist will work within a team to set up, execute, troubleshoot, and analyze fermentations. The expectation is that the candidate will be committed to continuous improvement of fermentation processes, operational issues, and safety, as well as perform basic maintenance on fermentation equipment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work within a team to execute fermentations at 7.5L scale. Conduct troubleshooting to solve or mitigate issues. Record data, make observations, draw conclusions. Lead activities of two other scientists. Generate ideas for experimentation and process improvement.

  • Perform detailed work while following experimental protocols, working under minimal direction.

  • Develop fermentation protocols and create corresponding documentation such as SOPs and Job Safety Assessments (JSAs).

  • Work in an aseptic manner and maintain a clean shared workspace.

  • Conduct basic maintenance of fermentation and analytical equipment.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts on execution of fermentations and laboratory safety.

Skills and Proficiencies

Skills and experiences required or useful for the candidate:

  • MSc or BSc in microbiology, fermentation science, or related field.

  • 4-10 years of experience in pilot or bench scale fermentation systems, working on aerobic or anaerobic fermentation of bacteria, yeast, or filamentous fungi.

  • Solid understanding of fermentation equipment, troubleshooting and maintenance.

  • Preferred candidate will have industrial biotechnology experience, demonstrating delivery of value to the business through execution of projects.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with both technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Demonstrated ability of working with diverse, multidisciplinary teams to coordinate the transfer of knowledge through scale-up to provide value for the business.

  • Working as a part of a team to ensure safety in the workplace.
