Sr. Staff or Principal Software Engineer

Position overview:

The Climate Corporation is modernizing the agriculture industry with a platform and products that are helping the world’s farmers sustainably increase productivity with digital tools. Our backend software engineering teams collect, process, transform and analyze vast amounts of agronomic and geospatial data. We then work with our science organization to understand how our growers can realize the full potential of their farmable land. As a part of the Data Acquisition and Delivery group, you will work with software, hardware and mechanical engineers creating devices and systems for data collection. Our team works to build new ways to collect data at scale and improve data quality for our partner engineering and science organizations.

By applying to this requisition you will be considered for roles ranging Sr. Staff Software Engineer to Principal Software Engineer in our organization. We will partner with you to determine the appropriate level during the interview process.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead technical direction and architecture to scale our connected cloud services globally, as well as overseeing our architectural approach to IoT device management and data collection

  • Work with engineering and science teams to learn existing systems and infrastructure

  • Plan, lead and guide improvements and architecture in key discipline areas and in a global cross functional capacity

  • Mentor across the organization on best practices and techniques

  • Working on internal and external standards, participate in designing device protocols, data exchange processes as well as industry standard adaptations as applicable

  • Learn new technologies and frameworks to solve unique challenges in the agriculture industry

  • Stay connected with the agriculture industry and our grower customers to ensure that their needs are appropriately reflected in the product roadmap

  • Deliver high quality, sustainable systems and teach others to do the same

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS, MS or equivalent in Computer Science or related technical field

  • 10+ years experience programming in Java or an equivalent OOP language

  • 10+ years hands-on experience developing robust back-end services and platforms and supporting large-scale applications and infrastructure

  • 4+ years writing architectural requirements and systems design documents

  • Experience building scalable backend services (REST APIs, microservices, designing and implementing efficient data processing algorithms, messaging paradigms, middleware, persistent store)

  • Experience with any public cloud-based provider such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform or Microsoft Azure

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, engineering diagrams, and listening skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner

  • Expertise in Iot, embedded devices, mobile device management

  • Expert knowledge of software development methodologies and best practices

  • Expert knowledge building robust backend services and REST APIs

  • Expertise designing and implementing highly scalable data-intensive processing systems

  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases and persistence store

  • Experience with Amazon Web Services (EC2, S3, RDS, SQS, etc.) (Strong Plus)

  • Experience with a compiled JVM language (Java, Scala, Clojure) (Strong Plus)

  • Experience with messaging paradigms and middlewares (SQS, JMS etc)
