The Chicago Prevention and Intervention Epicenter (Chicago PIE) in the Division of Infectious Diseases & Department of Medicine is seeking a Research Lab Supervisor.
The Chicago Prevention and Intervention Epicenter (Chicago PIE) is the core of a $10 million CDC-funded research program with the overarching goal of preventing healthcare-associated infections. One of only eleven Prevention Epicenters in the U.S., we have been funded continuously since 2006. Current investigations include monitoring the regional transmission of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae using whole genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis, investigating and improving skin antisepsis in critically ill patients to reduce the risk of invasive infection, and characterizing the relationship between the gastrointestinal microbiome and risk of multidrug resistant organism transmission and infection. Oversees and manages multiple research studies and ensures successful completion of research objectives. Performs research in the study of the epidemiology and prevention of infectious diseases at a high level of proficiency without supervision. Conducts research with integrity, interacts with individuals within the laboratory and from other laboratories to learn methods, maintains the common areas, and interacts with vendors to monitor the consumable supplies of the laboratory and to assist with purchase of equipment, computers and software. Lab supervisory duties will be central to this position in addition to the research skills outlined. The successful candidate is expected to act in accordance with RUSH policies and procedures and to exemplify the RUSH mission, vision and values.
Position Responsibilities Include:
Obtains overall project objectives from Principal Investigator (PI) and then plans, executes, and monitors the conduct of multiple research studies from design to publication. Works in coordination and collaboration with outside institutions and sources to ensure the successful completion of each research project.
Plans and conducts applied research studies working with resources as given and solves research problems using an advanced level of understanding of methodology and an awareness of the current state of scientific knowledge in a particular field.
Consults with PI on problems and may recommend, develop or design new protocols, exercising scientific judgment in order to ensure that research objectives are attained.
Supervises research personnel. Manages the daily operations of the study scheduling work of technical staff as necessary to bring projects to a successful and timely conclusion.
Ensures regulatory compliance and quality control of research studies.
Participates in departmental activities including journal clubs, workshops and seminars. Attends conferences and seminars to keep abreast of current trends.
Position Qualifications Include:
Master of Science degree or equivalent with at least six years of laboratory experience conducting research is required along with a high level of understanding of microbiology.
Experience supervising technical personnel strongly preferred.
Must have proficient knowledge of microbiology and molecular biology.
Must have proficient computer skills including data management and digital imagery processing.
Must be self-driven and assertive in order to successfully perform the duties associated with being the research laboratory supervisor.
