Freedman Seating Co Manufacturing Manager Truck and Cutaway Bus Components in Chicago, Illinois

Freedman Seating Company, a leading manufacturer of bus and commercial truck seats located on the west side of Chicago, has an immediate opening for a manufacturing manager.


Manages the welding, press brake, stamping press, and other fabrication processes for our metal component value streams. Their supervisors, leads, welders, operators, and material handlers will convert subcomponents – blanks, brackets, and tubes – into seat frame components supplying our truck and cutaway bus value streams. Reports to an operations executive and works in collaboration with the upstream, subcomponent manufacturing manager to ensure assembly departments receive all necessary metal components accurately and just-in-time so they can fulfill customer orders on time.


  • Ensure the comprehensive success of the truck and cutaway bus manufacturing operations

  • Use 5S principles to keep a safe, orderly, and pleasant work environment for all employees

  • Set clear expectations and provide necessary tools and support to workers

  • Manage personnel including staffing levels, hiring, training, discipline, and termination

  • Coach and develop supervisors, leads, and other employees

  • Upkeep equipment through proper operation, operator preventative maintenance, and detailed repair requests

  • Schedule work to be completed in a safe, efficient, and timely fashion

  • Analyze results of key metrics (safety, rejections, budget, scrap, on-time delivery, etc.), plan improvements, execute the plan, monitor changes, and adjust actions as needed

  • Identify process and facility opportunities and then collaborate with necessary departments including manufacturing engineering and maintenance

  • Audit the compliance to established standard operating procedures and update, as necessary

  • Collaborate across disciplines with other managers to drive the future of Freedman Seating

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or technical management

  • 2 years’ experience managing several manufacturing departments across multiple shifts totaling over 75 employees

  • 8 years’ manufacturing and/or engineering experience with metal fabrication

  • Educated in quick response manufacturing, lean production, total quality management, total productive maintenance, and other field concepts and practices

  • Hands-on individual that will root cause, implement corrective actions, and drive continuous improvement on the factory floor

  • Ability to communicate effectively – both verbally and written – with all levels of the work force including operators, engineers, and executives

  • Exposure to welding, press brakes, stamping presses, robotics and other metal shop equipment

  • Understand shipping and receiving product from subcontractors, such as paint shops

  • Working knowledge of ERP, PLM, and QMS systems
