Duties and Responsibilities
The position is in the lab of Dr. Yoel Stuart. The technician will be responsible for (i) preparing for field and lab work; (ii) collecting and sectioning sediment cores from alpine lakes; (iii) preparing sediment cores for description and radioisotope dating; (iv) isolating dormant Daphnia eggs (ephippia) from core sections; (v) running life history experiments to measure fitness of Daphnia clones from different sections. The field work involves travel to remote alpine lakes in Utah as part of the field team collecting sediment cores. We camp at our field sites. We launch a boat every day to take our sediment cores. The lab work at Loyola University Chicago requires sectioning of cores, sediment handling and preparation, and microscopy to isolate hundreds of ephippia over several months. Once ephippia are isolated, they will be shipped to the lab of a collaborator at UT Arlington. The technician will travel to UTA to help run experiments. Throughout lab work, the technician will help supervise undergraduate researchers working in the laboratory.
Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
Applicants must have a bachelor’s with 0 – 1 years’ experience in the subject field.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, or a related field. They must have a valid US driver’s license. They must be able to swim. They should have experience conducting research in aquatic systems and/or with dissection microscopes. They should have some experience with animal care. They should willing to drive a pickup truck (Ford F150) on narrow, winding mountain roads.
