As our global footprint continues to grow, we are looking for a Human Factors Research Intern with a focus on medical device usability testing to join our team in downtown Chicago, IL and start immediately supporting our Human Factors research team on a full-time basis. As a Human Factors Research Intern with Emergo by UL’s HFR&D team, you will explore the relationship between human beings and the systems they use. By applying principles of psychology, engineering and more, you’ll seek to understand the challenges users currently face when interacting with a product and identify opportunities to improve its safety, efficiency and ease of use. For products further along in development, you might plan and conduct tests to confirm the product can be used safely and effectively by its intended users and for its intended uses.

Emergo by UL's Human Factors Research & Design (HFR&D) team ( is a global Human Factors consultancy with offices in Concord, MA; Chicago, IL; Utrecht, The Netherlands; Cambridge, United Kingdom; and Tokyo, Japan. Our staff consists of more than 65 human factors professionals with degrees in disciplines such as human factors, biomedical engineering, psychology, and industrial design.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

  • Supporting usability testing, field research, individual interviews, and group interviews in person with intensive COVID-19 precautions in place.

  • Potentially driving to other nearby US cities to conduct research (if comfortable).

  • Assisting with the development of deliverables including usability test plans, data collection materials, usability test reports, risk analyses, user profiles, task analyses, and Human Factors Engineering (HFE) reports.

  • Analyzing quantitative and qualitative data to help evaluate client user interface designs.

  • Assisting in preparing client deliverables by reviewing test results and providing solutions to identified improvement areas.

  • Coordinating participant recruitment for individual or group usability testing.

  • Supporting the preparation of Investigational Review Board (IRB) submissions.

  • Preparing the laboratory for in-person usability testing.

  • Ensuring products have a consistent and cohesive user experience.

  • Performing other duties as directed.

Note: This position will include some element of in-person research, but any desk-based activities (e.g., drafting usability test plans, analyzing usability test data) will be done remotely.

  • Classes in Human Factors Engineering or a related discipline, such as Psychology, Experience/Interaction Design, Industrial Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering.
