IBM maintains the largest corporate network in the world, and it is highly critical to the success of our business. The Automation and Tooling organization within the CIO Network Engineering domain is looking for a technical leader and first-line manager located in Cambridge, MA (preferred) or one of our other locations in Southbury, CT, Armonk, NY, Research Triangle Park, NC. You would lead a multi-discipline team of Site Reliability Engineers and tool operation personnel, whose responsibilities include the development, deployment and operations of both custom and commercial tooling, used by the rest of the network engineering domain; these tools provide visibility and automation to manage and control the global IBM corporate network.

You will lead this team to architect, build and manage a system of global network of edge compute devices in hundreds of IBM sites globally to host various network services, perform diagnostics and control our network. This is a rare opportunity in IBM to create a new “green field” high-value network service based on the latest technology, which will be deployed globally with a multi-year service period. This new service will embody the most recent security control concepts, technologies, and automation tooling.

Additionally, you and your team will be responsible for the automation and support for the highly visible BlueFringe ( https://ibm.biz/bluefringe ) project; this multi-tenant service allows IBMers performant and redundant access to and from the IBM intranet to cloud and is a critical component of the IBM CIO’s hybrid cloud hosting strategy. We are not just building a highly automated build process with regression testing, monitoring and deployment promotion, but also a service that customers can also use within their own DevOps pipeline to deploy their cloud solutions.

The CIO Network Engineering domain and its vendors manage IBM’s global corporate network. This organization is leading a massive, comprehensive transformation of the internal network and is creating and deploying new state-of-the-art services. Individuals working within this organization will find themselves challenged with the expectation that their skills and knowledge in networking, security and automation will be highly honed and globally competitive both inside and outside of IBM.

The squad contains a unique mix of skills, including network architects, software developers/automation engineers, operational support, and security SMEs.

A successful candidate will have an established background in leading strong, capable SMEs in creating and innovating, in career development of squad members, in genuine interest in each squad member’s wellbeing, in network technologies, in security knowledge, in software development, in project management and in recruiting additional SMEs to the squad.

Job Duties:

  • Leading squad to plan, architect, design, create the new edge compute and tooling services.

  • Leading squad to continue to deliver the current service offering.

  • Ensuring individual squad member’s knowledge and capabilities improve.

  • Allocating resources as necessary to ensure successful delivery of business objectives.

  • Managing interfaces and engagements between the squad and other significant stakeholders across the company, and with IBM’s most significant partners/vendors/suppliers, providing for an enduring smooth and effective relationships.

  • Listening to SMEs and other stakeholders, then forming data-based rational decisions, then translating those decisions into leader actions and plans which achieve business objectives.

  • Planning, estimating and articulating additional resources needs, then hiring to meet those needs.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 3+ years of managerial experience leading high performing teams in development and/or operational delivery settings

  • Knowledge and experience in networking, automation and security technologies

  • At least 8 years’ experience in troubleshooting complex systems, including operating systems, networks and application code.

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Previous experience in creating products and/or services

  • Knowledge and experience in automation

  • Knowledge and experience in software development

  • Knowledge and experience in ServiceNow, Ansible Tower

  • Knowledge and experience in software development in at least one modern language such as Python or Java.

  • Demonstrated experience developing an enterprise system with automated deployment

  • Knowledge and experience of UNIX/Linux systems.

  • Database knowledge including SQL and NoSQL.
